This milestone event marks a significant achievement for the FPU, setting a precedent for democratic engagement and unity.

The elections, held over three days, saw Fullahs from all corners of Sierra Leone participating actively in the democratic process. This extensive participation underscores the FPU’s commitment to self-governance and the principles of democracy. The outcomes of these elections are not just a win for the individual candidates but a collective victory for all Fulbehs in Sierra Leone.

Heartfelt congratulations are extended to all the winners who will now carry the responsibility of representing their districts and working towards the betterment of their members.

Special thanks are due to the FPU National Executive for their leadership, and ensuring the elections were conducted smoothly and fairly.

The FPU National Advisory Council (NA) also played a crucial role in providing guidance and oversight throughout the process.

FPU and Fullah Tribal Administration Distribute Over 1000 Bags of Rice During Ramadan in Sierra Leone

FPU National and Fullah Tribal Administration Western Area distributes over 1000 bags of rice to deliver hope and sustenance to the underprivileged during Ramadan across Sierra Leone.

The Fullah Progressive Union (FPU), in collaboration with the Fullah Tribal Administration Western Area in Sierra Leone, has embarked on a significant initiative to support the underprivileged during Ramadan. Their joint effort aims to distribute over 1000 bags of rice to various marginalized groups, including mosques, orphanages, widows, disables and communities across all 16 districts in Sierra Leone.

The official launch of this noble project took place today, Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, at the FPU headquarters in Freetown. Alhaji Osman Bah, the National Secretary General of FPU, represented the National President, Alhaji Umaru Sanu Barrie, during the symbolic ceremony. The event was attended by key stakeholders from both the FPU and the Fula Tribal Administration.

This act of charity and solidarity has become a tradition, as the FPU and the Fullah Tribal Administration have consistently carried out similar donations during Ramadan for the past four years. Their commitment to uplifting the less fortunate members of society reflects the values of compassion and community support deeply rooted within the Fullah culture.

In a groundbreaking ceremony held at the Freetown city council auditorium on Saturday, May 25th, 2024, the Fullah Progressive Union (FPU) under the leadership of Alhaji Umaru Sanu Barrie has hosted its fourth annual education scholarship awards with the theme ‘The role of education in peacebuilding and national cohesion’ and with the aimed to a new Scholarship drive to support hundredths of university students across Sierra Leone. This initiative marks one of the largest scholarship schemes in the country’s history, second only to government efforts.

The President of the organization chief Alhaji Umaru Sanu Barrie thanked all the attendees while encouraging everyone to support his executive as they complement government towards free quality education, saying he feels disappointed to see young people become drop especially girls. “All of us know what education can do. Look at the high table it is dominated by women” he stated, adding women’s empowerment is one of his organization’s goals stressing the need to support more in education. He said most of their beneficiaries are girls.

According to him, his institution is not only supporting or providing scholarship to students but also providing other humanitarian gesture including providing food to the less fortunate during the Holy Month of Ramadan while they fast and settling conflicts between cattle rearers and farmers in the provenance among others.

Earlier, the chairperson of the program Madam Haja Ramatu Timbo had recalled the constraints faced by Fulani women in acquiring formal education but said that narrate has changed as there are lots of Fullah women who have acquired Western education and are contributing significantly to nation-building. She urged that more children should be send to school.

Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazak Bah is the financial secretary of FPU said since the organization’s convention in 2019 that was held in Magboraka education has been their flagship priority and said the year under review they have raised about five hundred thousand Leone (NLe 500,000), saying ninety percent of that amount was raised by the executive whilst the remaining ten percent was from the general membership. He added that seventy percent of the money raised was given as a support to girls. “Scholarships are given to deserving students ” he pointed out. He requested other potential individuals and organizations like theirs’ to join and support their scholarship agenda.

Delivering her keynote address, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurrie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education said the theme for the event is appropriate and that FPU has aligned its agenda to support the government something she said the government of President Bio is committed to. She said for the Fullah Progressive Union to give seventy percent of their scholarship to women means a lot while encouraging more girls to be supported in different fields of study including Agriculture.

Peace, Dr. Wurrie said should go beyond the classroom and to promote social cohesion and inclusion is very vital, saying the FPU has demonstrated to champion it and to continue doing it including changing the narrative from their ancestors while promising her ministry’s and government support.

Speaking on behalf of the Liberia delegation Madan Isatu Bah-Kenneth said she is impressed towards the level of contribution the Sierra Leonean Fullah community to human capital development. According to her, they have learned a lesson, especially the gender inclusion in the leadership structure of FPU and they will do the same after they have returned to Liberia, adding before now it was very difficult to see a Fulani going to school in Liberia, especially girls. “I want to say that when you educate a woman, you have educated a nation” She stated emphasizing the need for more girls to be sent to school.

Binta Bah is a student from the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) and a beneficiary who expressed gratitude to FPU while calling on other organizations to join the Fullah Progressive Union to expand their scholarships to other students who are not fortunate enough to go to university. While Sheku Mansaray said FPU is not only supporting Fullah students but other tribes as well he is an example, noting he has learned to spread peace and empathy among citizens regardless of tribal lines.
