FPU Condemns Ethnic Profiling and Harassment of Fullahs in Sierra Leone

By: Mackie M. Jalloh

The Fullah Progressive Union (FPU) strongly denounces the wave of harassment, ethnic profiling, and wrongful detention of peaceful Fullah Sierra Leoneans, which began on Sunday, December 15, 2024, in Freetown and has now reportedly spread to Waterloo, Kono, and other parts of the country. These acts of targeting Fullahs as undocumented foreigners, leading to arbitrary arrests and detentions, represent a gross violation of human rights and an affront to Sierra Leone’s constitutional principles of equality, justice, and unity.

The FPU is deeply concerned that such systemic harassment undermines national cohesion and stokes unnecessary divisions among Sierra Leone’s diverse ethnic groups. This shameful act of ethnic profiling threatens not only the dignity and safety of the Fullah community but also the democratic fabric of the nation. Sierra Leone cannot afford to regress into discriminatory practices that marginalize its citizens based on ethnicity.

The Fullah community has long been an essential pillar of Sierra Leone’s socio-economic, political, and cultural development. Fullahs have worked in solidarity with other groups to build a united, peaceful, and prosperous nation. It is, therefore, appalling and unacceptable for any group to face unwarranted discrimination and insecurity in their homeland.

The FPU unequivocally calls on the government and security forces to:
1. Immediately halt all acts of harassment and unlawful detention of Fullahs or any other group based on ethnicity.
2. Uphold the rule of law and treat all citizens with fairness, dignity, and respect.
3. Launch an independent investigation into these arrests, holding accountable any individuals or officials involved in this injustice.

We demand that the government publicly reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all citizens and ensuring equal treatment under the law. Acts of discrimination and harassment are direct threats to Sierra Leone’s unity and progress.

The FPU stands firm in solidarity with the Fullah community and all Sierra Leoneans who value justice, equality, and peace. Sierra Leone must not allow injustice to tear apart its hard-earned unity.

A Triumph for Democracy within the Fullahs of Sierra Leone

The elections, held over three days, saw Fullahs from all corners of Sierra Leone participating actively in the democratic process. This extensive participation underscores the FPU’s commitment to self-governance and the principles of democracy. The outcomes of these elections are not just a win for the individual candidates but a collective victory for all Fulbehs in Sierra Leone.

Heartfelt congratulations are extended to all the winners who will now carry the responsibility of representing their districts and working towards the betterment of their members.

The successful execution of these elections would not have been possible without the unwavering support and diligent efforts of several key bodies within the FPU. Special thanks are due to the FPU National Executive for their leadership, and ensuring the elections were conducted smoothly and fairly.

The FPU National Advisory Council (NA) also played a crucial role in providing guidance and oversight throughout the process.

Gratitude is also extended to the Fullah Chiefs across all districts, whose cooperation and leadership were instrumental in mobilizing voters and ensuring a peaceful election process. Their involvement highlights the deep-rooted cultural respect and unity within the Fullah community.

A particular acknowledgment must be given to the FPU Electoral Commission, whose tireless efforts and dedication ensured that the elections were conducted with the utmost integrity and transparency. Their work has set a high standard for future electoral processes.

In addition, sincere appreciation is extended to the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) for their invaluable support and guidance throughout the election process.

Thanks are also due to the Sierra Leone Police, whose presence and efforts in maintaining peace and order were essential in ensuring a safe and secure environment for voters.

The conclusion of these district elections stands as a beacon of democracy within the Fullah community and serves as an inspiring example to others across Sierra Leone.

The FPU has demonstrated that with collective effort and a shared commitment to democratic principles, significant milestones can be achieved.

As the newly elected representatives take office, the FPU looks forward to a future of continued progress, unity, and democratic engagement. This historic event will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment in the FPU’s journey towards self-governance and community empowerment.
